BC Hockey Hall
of Fame News Release

Stu Berry is the 2003 Larry Ashley Award
Recipient. The award dedicated to the memory of the late Vancouver Canuck
trainer is given out annually to a member of the trainer fraternity. The
recipient must be from BC or working in BC and must show many of the same
humanitarian values that Larry had.
Trainer’s equipment managers, and medical staff have
been an important part of the game for many years and the men and women who
perform this service (many unpaid) do so with little if any recognition
outside of the dressing room.
Stu has spent the last 20 years as a trainer of junior
hockey in Prince George. He has seen the team be involved in the Peace
Caribou, Rocky Mountain, and now the BC Hockey League. He has helped players
such as Tony Twist, Stu Malgunas, and Brad Fast go on to further their
careers and has put together a scrap book since 1982 that is on display in
the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame.
Both Orca Bay and Sportsnet recently featured Stu and he
will be honored Feb. 25th in Prince George with “ Stu Berry
Night”. He will receive a lifetime award from the BCHL and an Award named
after him for volunteer work by the Spruce Kings to go along with the Ashley
Award. It should be quite a night for a man who has kept in the shadows for
many years being both a trainer and father figure to many who have worn the
Prince George colors.
The Larry Ashley award has a
permanent home in a case in the BC Hockey Hall of Fame located in Penticton
Memorial Arena. For more information contact the BCHHF Society at
